Park(ing) Day is an annual worldwide event in which artists, designers, and citizens transform metered parking spaces into temporary urban parks for a day. The activity is designed to call attention to the need for more urban open space, and to generate debate about how public space is allocated, managed, and used. In the beginning of March, Sarah and I ended our long tenure as interns at Lake|Flato and began our long trek up to Nova Scotia to start graduate school at Dalhousie University. We were super excited to begin school but still found it difficult to say goodbye to our San Antonio family. It's the close of the first week back at work in the new year, and like everyone else, many of us at LF have been reflecting on and chatting about goals we're undertaking to make our personal, family and professional lives more enriching and productive than the previous year. This year, we broadened our frame of new-year's-resolution-thought and contemplated things we — and others in the architecture/design/green building/urban planning/(and on and on) community — could do to improve the profession as a whole. And there we were… huddled behind a gigantic boulder, shivering, wet, and terrified. This was sure to be the end. It was unbelievable how quickly the status of our trip had changed. One moment we were experiencing a blissful July 4 th afternoon on the Rio Grande, the next we were sitting silently imagining the tragic headlines that might follow our demise: “8 Lake|Flato Employees Die a Catastrophic Death at Big Bend.” Or at least I was. As I have begun my professional career at Lake|Flato by administrating the construction of one of the largest and most complex projects in our firm's history, I find that it is both entertaining and necessary to share what it has been like for a young designer to jump from the pond of architecture school into the deepest ocean of architectural reality. LF's three newest interns are well-adjusted to our family and just had a blast at Flake Lato. Meet Claire, Josh and Wo-Wu! Claire A Dallas, Texas native, Claire Fontaine comes to LF in the fifth year of her Bachelor of Architecture from UT Austin. Naturally, her time in Austin makes Hotel San Jose her favorite LF project. She is currently working on the Eleanor Kolitz Hebrew Language Academy. Claire likes biking and has an appreciation for finding a good swimming hole. She also loves live music shows.
