Eventually, many of us get to point where 500 degrees just won’t cut it. After years of making sub par pizzas in a conventional oven, I finally decided to build a wood fire pizza oven in my backyard. Looking at the options, a brick oven seemed too expensive and a metal oven seemed too time consuming, so I went with the material that was used to build the world’s first ovens, mud. Though similar in materials and design from ovens built 300 years ago, unlike the ancients, I had the advantage of 3D modeling! Using Rhino to determine dimensions and Energy Plus to model heat flow though the...
Park(ing) Day is an annual worldwide event in which artists, designers, and citizens transform metered parking spaces into temporary urban parks for a day. The activity is designed to call attention to the need for more urban open space, and to generate debate about how public space is allocated, managed, and used. This year, Lake Flato designed and built a kinetic bus shelter prototype as one of the seven pop-up parks in front of 1221 Broadway. Throughout most of the day, the shade structures on existing VIA bus stop shelters don’t actually shade the bench below it. Because of the daily and...
In the beginning of March, Sarah and I ended our long tenure as interns at Lake|Flato and began our long trek up to Nova Scotia to start graduate school at Dalhousie University. We were super excited to begin school but still found it difficult to say goodbye to our San Antonio family. In order to take our minds off of the extreme sadness, we decided to distract ourselves with a road trip schedule that would take the longest possible route to our final destination in Halifax. For this, we went West instead of East — taking a few brave intern souls with us as we hiked to the top of the...
Graduate School Admissions Notification Season is winding down and two Lake|Flato interns, Wo Wu and Pavan Iyer, have emerged with acceptance letters in hand. Wo was accepted to the architecture programs at Columbia University, University of Pennsylvania, and Washington University in St. Louis. He chose… Columbia! Wo is looking forward to “Columbia’s studio as a laboratory for learning incisive thinking skills and exploring unknown architectural realm, and interacting with a diverse body of classmates and faculty from all over the world.” When asked about what skills he developed at Lake|...
"We previously knew Harriet Pattison through bits and pieces.... But now an oral history project sheds more light on Harriet Pattison’s life and work. As part of an ongoing oral history series on landscape architects, the D.C. based nonprofit the Cultural Landscape Foundation (TCLF) is releasing a 93-minute oral history on Harriet Pattison . In 32 wide-ranging clips, Pattison reveals how she approached her work, life, and Kahn. The series begins with her growing up in Chicago, through her opening of a private practice, to her major works like the Hershey Company Headquarters."
It's the close of the first week back at work in the new year, and like everyone else, many of us at LF have been reflecting on and chatting about goals we're undertaking to make our personal, family and professional lives more enriching and productive than the previous year. This year, we broadened our frame of new-year's-resolution-thought and contemplated things we — and others in the architecture/design/green building/urban planning/(and on and on) community — could do to improve the profession as a whole. We also thought it would be productive to include inspiration from some industry...
And there we were… huddled behind a gigantic boulder, shivering, wet, and terrified. This was sure to be the end. It was unbelievable how quickly the status of our trip had changed. One moment we were experiencing a blissful July 4 th afternoon on the Rio Grande, the next we were sitting silently imagining the tragic headlines that might follow our demise: “8 Lake|Flato Employees Die a Catastrophic Death at Big Bend.” Or at least I was. Why I am just now recounting our story is due to the fact that it has taken me this long to process everything that happened. And also I’ve been really busy...

As I have begun my professional career at Lake|Flato by administrating the construction of one of the largest and most complex projects in our firm's history, I find that it is both entertaining and necessary to share what it has been like for a young designer to jump from the pond of architecture school into the deepest ocean of architectural reality. My first day at Lake|Flato was equally overwhelming and wonderful – I still remember each (at the time) unfamiliar but exceptionally friendly face as I was paraded through the office to each and every desk. In the midst of these introductions...
LF's three newest interns are well-adjusted to our family and just had a blast at Flake Lato. Meet Claire, Josh and Wo-Wu! Claire A Dallas, Texas native, Claire Fontaine comes to LF in the fifth year of her Bachelor of Architecture from UT Austin. Naturally, her time in Austin makes Hotel San Jose her favorite LF project. She is currently working on the Eleanor Kolitz Hebrew Language Academy. Claire likes biking and has an appreciation for finding a good swimming hole. She also loves live music shows. Once on Google, Claire discovered that a French paper manufacturer is also named Claire...
