Cycling is a big part of the culture here at Lake|Flato and yesterday three members of our very own Southtown Strays had their inaugural Shell Ride. Over the past few weeks the Strays have quietly been gaining speed and on Sunday our crew was ready to make its way farther south. It was the first time out for Ashley, Seema, and our photographer Ryan. It was the second ride for Cotton, and approximately the tenth ride for Corey. The Shell Ride is a right of passage and the typical weekday (and occasional weekend) route for many LF cyclists. We head south from downtown past the San Antonio...
We're happy to introduce our newest Project Director, Michael Britt. Before joining us in San Antonio, Michael worked in Charlottesville where he also attended the University of Virginia for his M.Arch. He was a project manager for EcoMod, affordable and sustainable housing, which was recently featured in Architect Magazine . He has been told that he has "crazy sharp" vision (his ophthalmologist's official diagnosis), which means he can see twice as far as the normal person. This has apparently come in handy when he goes bird watching. Some other random tidbits about Michael: His spirit...
Every year (for now 8 years) the Third Street Grackles fundraise for and ride in the Bike MS: Ride to the River , a two-day 157-mile bike ride that raises money for multiple sclerosis research and other services supported by the National MS Society. And I was able to celebrate a little personal accomplishment: 100 miles was the longest I've ever ridden in a day by 70 miles! The Grackles have some phenomenal fundraisers--both helping the cause immensely and...
A group of Lake Flatonians attended the San Antonio AIA Awards Banquet last Friday. It is always exciting to put projects up for award consideration and very rewarding and humbling to be selected for recognition. It ended as a very memorable evening that saw the firm win a record 6 design awards including top honors for our Desert Residence and Cranbrook Kingswood Girls' Middle School. Out of a total of 88 submissions only nine received built design awards. The jury of Josh Shelton of El Dorado (Kansas City), Rusty Smith of Rural Studios (Auburn University) and Wendy Pautz of LMN Architects (...
Arizona State University's Student Health Services Renovation, a joint project between Lake|Flato Architects and orcutt | winslow, officially earned LEED Platinum certification earlier this month. This is the highest certification level available from the U.S. Green Building Council. The project entailed the demolition of approximately 15,000 sq. ft. of inefficient single-story facility, the renovation of 14,000 sq. ft. of existing two-story structure containing administrative support, labs, wellness programs, and the addition of a new 20,000 sq. ft. two-story wing containing campus health...
