Architecture to Connect: Egypt

Pyramids of Giza, Giza - c. 2589-2504 B.C.
The end of my 16 year long formal education was the best thing to happen to my appetite for knowledge. In November of 2020, I moved back to Cairo after a year long stay in San Antonio as a 'cultural and educational exchange visitor' to intern at Lake Flato. And boy was there a lot of culture and education to be exchanged. Working with the wonderful architects and designers at Lake Flato has taught me so much that I could have never learned in school. Beyond learning about the technical skills necessary to bring a design to fruition, it reinforced in my mind just how much of a connection the...

L|F San Antonio Office Goes Zero Carbon with Big Sun Solar

311 Third Street, our San Antonio office, was built in 1920 and was originally designed for Hupmobile , an automobile company. “In 1985, David and Ted bought partial ownership in the building, and started Lake|Flato Architects on the south side of the second floor. The firm expanded to the second floor north side in 1990, the third floor in 2003 (when Ted and David took full ownership), and the entire first floor in 2005. In 2008 we completed a full renovation of the main level." (to read the full story check out: Better Know an L|F Project: 311 Third Street | Lake Flato ) Today (2021), we...

Unsung Architects: Hassan Fathy & Helen Liu Fong

Unsung Architects is a series celebrating architects not often highlighted in academia with the intent to collectively educate and provide new perspectives within the architecture discipline. HASSAN FATHY: Hassan Fathy (1900-1989), a regional modernist, was Egypt’s most well-known architect in the 20th century, but his (controversial) popularity did not extend beyond the region. His formative years as an architect were during a time when Egypt was within its struggle to gain sovereignty against the British. It was also a time when Romanticism & Enlightenment were thriving, creating waves...

INVESTIGATIONS: Eco-Senior Living

Wood and steel canopy over an outdoor wood deck surrounded by stone walls and water features.
Investigations Team: Andrew Herdeg, Kelly Weckman, Allison Peitz We are at a critical point in time in which the “silver wave” of the baby boomer generation is growing rapidly and beginning to enter retirement age. This large cohort of seniors will need housing, and ideally, housing that can fit their changing needs as they age. There is a growing desire to age in place and avoid the upheaval of displacement so late in life. Senior living communities that can adapt to the changing needs of aging seniors are becoming a commodity, and as this sector grows there is an opportunity to explore...

A Look Inside Hotel Magdalena, the first Mass Timber boutique hotel in North America

Hotel Magdalena
Located in the heart of Austin’s South Congress neighborhood, the recently opened Hotel Magdalena is the first mass timber boutique hotel in North America. The mass timber wood structure honors the history of the site including the former 1950s Austin Terrace Motel – previously constructed of exposed heavy timber beams and columns in the mid-century modern aesthetic. The design team, including Lake|Flato, operator Bunkhouse Group and Ten Eyck Landscape Architects sought to reference this history and material aesthetic by creating warm, inviting structures. Scroll down for a look inside Hotel...

Lake|Flato's Just Label

JUST label blog post header image
Lake|Flato has a Just. label through the International Living Future Institute (ILFI). Today's post is about what the Just. label is and shares our label. Just. is a voluntary program that promotes transparency within organizations to promote social justice and enhance employee engagement. This, of course, does not mean member firms are perfect. Rather, it allows each firm to start where they are at, and improve on equity, diversity, and inclusion. The Just label has represented one of our first “objective” steps in our EDI journey, a way to understand our baseline and make progress. From...
