BETTER KNOW AN LF'ER: JUSTIN AND DAVID

We are also very happy to welcome David and Justin who have migrated south to San Antonio to join the office as our newest design staff members. Justin Ford is from Fountain Hills, AZ and attended the University of Texas in Austin to earn his Masters of Architecture. He will be jumping into the housing studio to work on Granby Ranch. One of his favorite LF projects is our own home sweet office, 311 Third Street. Along with the proverbial love of sketching shared by many in the office, Justin enjoys short story anthologies, and playing fingerstyle acoustic guitar. David Archer, a University of...

BETTER KNOW AN LF'ER : ERIC BOWMAN

Eric Bowman, our new Digital Design Manager joined us right before Christmas, an early present for many Revit users here at the office. While many of us were fooled at Halloween (see Rob’s costume below) the search for a BIM guru ended right before the holidays. Rob, dressed as a BIM manager. Halloween is confusing for everyone. Originally from Westport Connecticut, Eric has also lived and worked in NYC, Hartford CT, Dallas, then Austin, before landing in San Antonio. Eric received his B. Arch from City University of New York, but began his career working as an audio\recording engineer in the...

BETTER KNOW AN LF'ER: ANA LOZANO

Professional. Responsible. Pleasant. Thoughtful. Poised. At every turn, Ana has been a joy to know and work with during her time here at LF. I am thankful for the many ways she contributed to our projects and – importantly for me – my family. All the Rickels girls will miss her dearly and look forward to a hopeful return to San Antonio upon graduation! - Brandi Rickels Secretly the IDEA Public Schools Headquarters Building and the Texas Military Institute teams wished we could have cloned Ana during her time here. She quickly proved herself invaluable to both teams, and over the last six...

BETTER KNOW AN LF'ER: JOE LOMAS

Joe just rocks. On our design team, Joe has been a “speak-softly-but-carry-a-big-stick” type of teammate; no matter what he’s tasked with, he jumps in after minimal explanation, swiftly gets the job done, and is ready for more before you know it. He’s never afraid to ask questions, but rarely needs to—he’s a very quick learner with a broad skill set, and seemingly endless patience. During his half-year here, Joe has helped cut hundreds of little foam core blocks for models, drawn thousands of tiny circles for a perforated screen pattern, prepared millions of plan iterations for David Lake…ok...

Better Know an LF'er: "SNEEZY" JEANNETTE OF THE SEVEN INTERN DWARFS

A giant smile breaks across my face when Jeannette visits my desk - she is either asking to help me with something or offering some crazy baked goodie. I think it's her smile that goes airborne and infects other people causing them to break out in senseless smiles. Or maybe she puts something in those baked concoctions - they aren't normal ingredients, you know. I'm not sure they ever make it to the other floors. Jeannette's first task was to help me take notes for a client meeting - the meeting was 6 hours long, discussing 4 different buildings in 4 different phases and yes, just one client...

a design-build weekend: dancehall roof raising

Last weekend, a team of LFers enjoyed getting their hands dirty in the great outdoors--we put a roof on a dance hall. And we have a time-lapse video to prove it (cast your vote for the carpenter)! The setting: Kickapoo Ranch, a beautiful property located a 2.5-hour drive west of San Antonio belonging to the Flato family. The mission: attach wood purlins and then corrugated metal roofing on the dance hall structure. This structure consists of a concrete slab and re-used steel oil pipe, which were fabricated and placed earlier this summer. (Note: dance hall was already tested and approved sans...

CECE AND JORDAN JOIN THE TEAM

We are excited to announce two more additions to the Lake|Flato team: our newest intern, Jordan Tsai and marketing staff, Cecelia Smith. Cecelia is a native San Antonian who left the sunny south Texas skies to attend Syracuse University in New York. While braving the northeast winters, she earned a BA in Political Science with a Minor in Architecture. Cecelia’s favorite LF project is the Pearl Brewery because of its vibrant contribution to San Antonio’s urban life. When not coordinating the office’s social media sites, she enjoys cooking, judging debate tournaments, participating in urban...

Better Know an LF'er: JUNE JUNG

You’d be hard pressed to find a person more thoughtful than June. A great collaborator, his design sensibilities always carried an effortlessness that I envied (it seemed to come so easy!) You couldn’t have an interaction with June on a daily basis without being encouraged and challenged. His love for his family, work, friends, etc…was always apparent, and lifted the spirit in our studio. We’re going to miss him on our team- and his next office is lucky to have him. I’m excited to see where he, Saejin, and Hugo end up next. -David Ericsson Hometown: Seoul, South Korea Years at LF: 8 months...

Better Know an LF'er: KEEGAN RALEIGH

Keegan is the fifth intern that has contributed to the Porch House effort and the Lake Flato office. She piled in and immediately helped on numerous Porch House projects including Prow, Little Woods, Walker Porch House amongst others and non Porch House work that has drifted into the studio. In addition, she worked on several “Ted Projects” that deserve extra time, patience and cause one to work light on their feet, so to speak. She somehow was always able to translate my cryptic sketches into beautiful diagrams and graphics. From the beginning Keegan was always eager to learn, take on...
