"If you happen to overhear someone saying something like, 'sore-ey… but, you must have your drawings to me before too-mour-row' chances are you’ve been listening to one of our favorite resident Canadians, Jennifer Young, working her magic on one of our many (sometimes slippery) consulting engineers. Hailing originally from the great northern Provence of Newfoundland, Jennifer has now acclimated to a yearlong summer and shivers at the thought of anything below 60 degrees with a breeze. But don’t let her lack of thermal resistance fool you — she is one tough hombre… if you don’t believe that...
Young Julius Schulman is what I like to call him during shoots, but Casey Dunn is not one to lose focus when on location. He possesses a keen ability to visually capture the story of a project with effortless panache. Perhaps the genius lies in his own talent of storytelling, a skill any good photographer must have while waiting for light (unless a game of rock-paper-scissors is initiated). We have tremendous respect for Casey's talent and if you ever get a chance to work with him make sure you request some free-styling...we get the best results this way . -Denise De Leon Story Pool House,...
"Joseph performed well beyond the call of duty for me and David on the HEB downtown campus. He tirelessly worked on the project late into the night or before dawn in the mornings. On several occasions he had to send to the client updates on the plans in the early morning hours, often times for 8:00 AM meetings. It was a demanding process where Joseph had to work through many modifications for both the master plan and for the downtown grocery. He was indispensable to the process. In addition to the HEB project, Joseph has helped with Woodinville, Houston 6 th and Waverly and other big master...
Introducing our newest intern, Keegan Raleigh! Within two days of starting her internship at LF, Keegan agreed to take a weekend trip with a couple of LFers to Marfa, Texas. I'm not quite sure she knew what she was getting herself into when she got into the cramped car for our journey West, but we were all very happy to have the opportunity to get to know her better (we quickly learned a couple things: she's a vegetarian, she briefly studied in Australia under Glenn Murcutt, and her nickname at her last job was "Nugget"). Although born in Denver, Keegan grew up in Houston. She received her...
Meet our most recent recruits: Daniel Lazarine and Ben Hartigan. Dan has been running in the LF circle for a number of years (he literally runs and cycles with the 3rd Street Grackles). He previously collaborated with Lake|Flato on the San Antonio Federal Courthouse. When asked to divulge an interesting fact about himself, Dan joked that his wife refers to him as "The World's Most Uninteresting Man". Ben is returning to Lake|Flato for a full time gig after interning with us a couple of years back. Although originally from Chicago, Ben was most recently working in Haiti. Adventurous at heart,...
The beginning of the year has brought new talent to the office: Casey Nelson and June Jung. Casey moved to San Antonio from Knoxville, Tennessee, after graduating with a B. Arch from the University of Tennessee (which she claims is "the real UT"). Her favorite LF project is Desert House ("that context!"). She'll be working with our independent schools team on the Academy of Our Lady of Peace in San Diego, CA. A fun fact about Casey: both she and her husband share birthdays with their fathers. June made the extremely long trek of 75 minutes from Austin to San Antonio with his wife and newborn...
"Pick any firm in the country and there is a single person that just knows where everything lives, someone essential to the continuity and culture of the office, a keymaster of sorts. At LF this is Denise. Known by many nicknames (perhaps mostly to me), like “Double D”, “short stack”, “Sugar”, etc, she is the mapmaker for all historical and cultural information; the gatekeeper for all important images, like that 20-year-old slide that David Lake recalls taking long ago but doesn't quite know where it was stashed but is "critical" for his last minute presentation; she is the talent behind our...
"I knew David and I would become good friends when I heard his answer to an intro question at his first office meeting: “What is your favorite color?” The answer, of course, is gray. Jump ahead a few months and we found ourselves working together on the same project, and jump ahead a few years, now after his return from grad school, and I’m lucky enough to still be working with him. His old friends nicknamed him Red, but here we call him Little Chef, or LC, as in that lovable rat from Ratatouille, you know, the one with all the talent! You can count on David for just about anything – he has a...
Have you ever known a Renaissance woman? Linda Perez is the first person who comes to mind when I hear that moniker. Linda gained local fame when her emotional Pecha Kucha talk elicited both tears and a standing ovation (the only I’ve ever witnessed) at the Center for Architecture, San Antonio. Linda is someone you meet and quickly want to get to know better. I first met Linda at the Pearl Farmer’s Market, where she was selling her grass fed beef. Many folks, local chefs included, enjoyed Linda's beef. We would all still be supporting her business were it not for the crippling drought Texas...
"Awino. A name that has something to do with an umbilical cord wrapped around somebody’s neck at birth, but not at her neck… maybe it was her dad’s? It’s hard to keep all her stories straight, but I sure did enjoy listening to them while working with her over the last 8 months. I knew as soon as I started giving her random tasks that Hellen with two l’s was smart and talented enough to tackled anything that I threw her way, but what really made her a pleasure to work with was her wonderful attitude and glowing smile that we all came to love. Oh, and since David’s on vacation I’ll go ahead and...
