A Nod to Tie Tuesdays

Some of our dapper young* men sported their ties this Tuesday in recognition of the intern who brought it to us: Thomas Johnston. He along with Nathan Geller (yearning for a different tie) and Kristin Walsh are saying their final goodbyes this Friday. We will miss them but are excited to see their successes in graduate school and beyond. Thanks for being great elements of the Lake|Flato team! *young is as one feels, not a number

Old Intern Returns for Fresh Gig

Say hello to Karla Edwards, previously Lake|Flato intern Karla Wallace from summer 2009-2010 and an alumni of Rice University. She has hit the ground running on Camana Bay. Her favorite Lake|Flato project is Armstrong Oil & Gas because of its cool strategies in adaptive reuse, like removing the enclosure in the middle of the building in order to form a courtyard. Along with architecture, she loves chemistry and once considered going into art restoration. Welcome, Karla!

Life Drawing at Lake|Flato

Last week we had our first life-drawing class here at Lake|Flato! Starting with a longer 8 minute pose, we gradually worked our way down to 10 seconds. The goal of this kind of exercise is to capture the essence and overall gesture of what you see. Below is a sampling of the drawings folks created. We will be doing this every week, space and schedule permitting. Hope to see you next time!

Not Just Another Pretty Car

Today at the office we bid a fond farewell to Cameron Smith's 1990 Oldsmobile 98 Regency. The car has been a fixture of retro-grouch coolness in the LF garage for the past seven years. As the car is now older than several of the office interns and the ac recently went out it is time to say goodbye to this flagship of the 1990 Oldsmobile lineup. Take the Farewell Olds Quiz after the images: 1. Cameron was how old when her parents brought the olds home new from the dealer? a. 11 b. 14 c. 25 2. Cameron uttered the following when she first laid eyes on the olds: a. "Awesome car; I love coat of...

New Employees Transform Pool Party into Abercrombie Ad

In recent years, the June event in the Papay's backyard has come to represent the official start of the Lake|Flato summer season. For those of us approaching middle age it also serves as an annual reminder of how bloated and hairy we are becoming.

Longhorns Take Over

Good news! We have new arrivals in the form of three interns and one design architect. From the left: Sameer Rayyan joins us from the MArch program at the University of Virginia. After externing with us over the winter, he is back due to his enjoyment of Taco Truck Fridays. Projects like Hill Country Jacal also may have been reasons why he wanted to work with Lake|Flato. Unfortunately he is the odd one out in a group of UT Austin Longhorns. hook 'em horns \m/ Jacqueline Fisher is here for her BArch residency at the University of Texas and appreciates Lake|Flato's awareness of place and...

Better Know an LFer: Gus Starkey

"Gus drives a Jeep which makes him a little like John Byrd. Gus also wears a hat which makes him a little like Matt Morris. He went to the University of Washington which makes him a little bit like Matt Wallace, and he's a great guy to have on your team...which means he is nothing like Chris Krajcer." -Steve Raike Hometown: Kerrville, TX [K-Vegas - The heart of the Hill Country] Years at LF: [8 months full-time] + [1 year internship] Current Project: Austin Central Library / Kickapoo Porch House Favorite LF Project: Bartlit Residence / Air Barns / Dog Team Too....so many I want to include......

Our Newest Project Designer

Say hello to Ashley Hereen, a recent addition to the Lake|Flato team! She comes to us most recently from Austin, Texas but was born in Las Vegas. She received her BA from Yale in 2005 and followed up with a Masters from Harvard in 2009. Her interest in the firm stems from "the sense of place... projects tied to physical and cultural contexts, sensitive to environmental opportunities and constraints, that often explore a contemporary vernacular." Plus she heard we were a nice group of folks. We look forward to Ashley's contributions as she hits the ground running on one of our independent...
