I recently took a trip home and visited some of the sites that were devastated by May's round of tornadoes. The most talked about tornado struck Moore May 20th, moving about 200 miles per hour and spanning 1.3 miles wide. The day before, a tornado touched ground in Shawnee. May 30th and 31st experienced another round of tornadoes which hit Broken Arrow, El Reno and Oklahoma City. The El Reno tornado was moving at 300 miles per hour and was 2.6 miles wide - the widest tornado recorded in U.S. history. It is a surreal experience to walk around the aftermath of these huge storms. The disaster...
We'd like to introduce two new LFers who have just completed their first two weeks! Josh Nieves , our newest student intern, and Rob Lingo , our newest intern architect, are helping out our residential studio. Josh joins us from Judson University in Chicago, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts and Architecture and will complete his Master's degree in 2015. He is originally from Hopewell Junction, New York. Currently, his favorite Lake|Flato project is 1221 Broadway apartments. One interesting fact about Josh is that he ate a Guinea Pig in Ecuador - he insists the cuisine in San Antonio is...
In case you haven't heard yet, back in April 2013 our very own Pearl Brewery/Full Goods Warehouse was awarded an AIA COTE Top Ten Award. The award is given by the American Institute of Architects to the top ten most sustainable projects across the country. We're certainly very proud to be on the list beside so many names we admire. There was an especially interesting post in Gizmodo about what elements set each winner apart. Some of these elements included Living Machines, 100% on site renewable energy production, energy meters in every classroom, or in our case it was "energy surfing". Yeah...

"While some may be intimidated by Oli’s tattoos or his silent demeanor, his British accent or the way he effortlessly pulls off a pair of new cowboy boots with skinny jeans, we here at Lake|Flato found him to be one of the nicest guys on the planet. We gave him the nickname “sweet angel baby”, and named our kickball team after him. Oli has always been quick to jump to lend a hand, whether helping manage the materials library, staying late to help out with a project deadline, building an arena out of cans for the food bank, or mentoring our high school intern. His enthusiasm for learning new...

In an effort to accelerate sustainable development around the world, the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), creators of the LEED green building program, announced last week a new campaign offering free LEED certification to the first projects to certify in the 114 countries where LEED has yet to take root. Coined “LEED Earth,” this campaign aims to bring LEED certification and thereby better-performing buildings into new markets. LEED is a global approach to more efficient, environmentally-sound buildings and is universally adaptable to address issues such as energy and potable water use,...
Tomorrow the Center City Development Office, sponsored by the Urban Land Institute, will be hosting a half-day workshop for developers, design professionals, and real estate attorneys interested in developing and facilitating development in the center city. “This workshop is an opportunity for developers and real estate professionals to meet key city staff, learn more about how the Center City Development Office can assist through the Center City Housing Incentive Policy and Inner City Reinvestment Infill Policy and get answers to commonly asked questions,“ emphasizes Lori Houston, Center...
