Good news! We have new arrivals in the form of three interns and one design architect. From the left: Sameer Rayyan joins us from the MArch program at the University of Virginia. After externing with us over the winter, he is back due to his enjoyment of Taco Truck Fridays. Projects like Hill Country Jacal also may have been reasons why he wanted to work with Lake|Flato. Unfortunately he is the odd one out in a group of UT Austin Longhorns. hook 'em horns \m/ Jacqueline Fisher is here for her BArch residency at the University of Texas and appreciates Lake|Flato's awareness of place and...
"Gus drives a Jeep which makes him a little like John Byrd. Gus also wears a hat which makes him a little like Matt Morris. He went to the University of Washington which makes him a little bit like Matt Wallace, and he's a great guy to have on your team...which means he is nothing like Chris Krajcer." -Steve Raike Hometown: Kerrville, TX [K-Vegas - The heart of the Hill Country] Years at LF: [8 months full-time] + [1 year internship] Current Project: Austin Central Library / Kickapoo Porch House Favorite LF Project: Bartlit Residence / Air Barns / Dog Team Too....so many I want to include......
This past school year a team of 6th grade entrepreneurs / venture capitalists formed a strategic alliance with Lake Flato to work on the design of some major new civic architecture that is being called a "game changer" for the AEC industry. The projects on the drawing boards were conceived and masterminded by the 6th graders with design consulting services performed by Lake Flato. The projects include a rotating restaurant up in a tree with toboggan slides and ice skating rink, a subterranean river walk with a medieval weapons gallery, a mobile cooking school and cupcake shop made of train...
Sammy Hightower joins the Children's Museum team this Friday afternoon to supply a dose of creative whim. This is not the first time Sammy has taken over a Lake Flatonian's computer to get things moving... Who will be her next target??
The beauty of Big Bend National Park’s remarkable landscape has much to tell us about relationships between the geology and paleontology of this unique place. Big Bend National Park has produced some of the most significant fossil finds in recent decades, yet these wonders are not adequately displayed or interpreted in the Park. Additionally, Big Bend National Park is one of the only National Parks with a clearly visible K-T boundary line marking the extinction of the dinosaur era. These characteristics create a unique opportunity for interpretation and education at the Fossil Discovery Trail...
Say hello to Ashley Hereen, a recent addition to the Lake|Flato team! She comes to us most recently from Austin, Texas but was born in Las Vegas. She received her BA from Yale in 2005 and followed up with a Masters from Harvard in 2009. Her interest in the firm stems from "the sense of place... projects tied to physical and cultural contexts, sensitive to environmental opportunities and constraints, that often explore a contemporary vernacular." Plus she heard we were a nice group of folks. We look forward to Ashley's contributions as she hits the ground running on one of our independent...
In case you missed last Thursday's PechaKucha Night, here is the presentation that received the first and only standing ovation: Rancher Linda Perez. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=9o5-COsdP6k
Mike and Tim from Reznikoff Custom Furniture recently sent us some shots of their burning process for a shou-sugi-ban finish to be applied as an interior finish for SK Ranch. Shou-sugi-ban is the ancient Japanese technique of charring wood to naturally protect it from weather, pests and rot. The result is a gorgeous textured charcoal finish. On SK Ranch, Mike and Tim are starting with vertical grain cedar boards and finishing with a clear polyurethane sealer.

Last week marked the start of Austin's Waller Creek design competition between four final teams. On Tuesday, our very own David Lake, FAIA, and Robert Harris, FAIA, LEED AP BD+C, with Dr. Kongjian Yu of Turenscape, spoke to a packed audience at the Blanton Museum in Austin about our team's vision of a living and productive landscape for Waller Creek. Afterward, the team was eager to hit the ground running and worked through the remainder of the week in our San Antonio office. Following Dr. Kongjian's four steps to a successful landscape (productivity, meditation, life-supporting, cultural),...
