Better Know an LF'er: Matthew Hlavinka

"Don't let Matthew's quietness fool you, it must be osmosis from Bill and Rand. His sharp eye for detail and strong graphic sensibility are equally balanced by his smart questions and wonderful attitude. I also love his last name, just say it: Hlavinka!" - Vicki Yuan " Taking cues from James Bond, Hlavinka prefers his martinis shaken, not stirred. He only speaks when it's necessary (unfortunately, not with an English accent). His perfectly manicured beard rivals that of Ron Swanson's moustache. He wears refreshingly distinguishable attire (a splash of color in a room full of architects can be...

new lfers add geographical diversity

We'd like to welcome our two most recent transplants, Megan Toma and Cotton Estes ! Megan joins us from North Carolina, where she received her Bachelor of Environmental Design in Architecture and Master of Architecture degrees from North Caronlina State University. Better Know an LFer: Sameer Rayyan

" Early on I couldn't get Sameer's name quite right. Sameer Rayyan, who I initially thought was Ryan Sameer, worked with me on several developer projects last Fall. Our client, Mark Tolley, would refer to him as my Savent (a person of profound or extensive learning; or learned scholar) - He worked day and night on projects such as the Peanut Factory and Carwash projects. Always pleasant, always willing to take on a difficult task, Sameer willingly and enthusiastically would take on any problem thrown his way. A pretty decent cyclist as well, Sameer peddled his way through a 100 mile day...

Better Know an LF'er: Jamie Sartory

"Jamie’s spirit animal is the Rabbit: she is good-natured, alert, and spontaneous. While landing a magnificent triple Salchow as a girl, Jamie made the brash decision that an easy road to celebrity via sequins and eyeshadow was not for her. The daughter of a culinary guru , Jamie learned to trust her taste and intuition, elevating the lowliest hoagie to haute cuisine by layering kettle chips between the cheese and tomato. She discovered that you can bypass vocational school, pursue an architecture degree over half a decade, and STILL emerge a master welder . Jamie’s journey away from the call...

Better Know an LF'er: Patrick Burnham

" Patrick joined Lake Flato destined to be “The” Georgia Tech intern, and the 220,000 sq. ft. lab building has kept him busy. His influence on the building is immediately visible; Patrick is responsible for the three story frit pattern on the building's north façade. What has everyone else been missing while the Georgia Tech team kept Patrick to themselves? First, he has awesome hair. I don't think he tries to have awesome hair, it just grows that way. What else? Most days Patrick’s socks don't match and he does this on purpose. Patrick has a profound love of food. He gets excited just...

Better Know an LF'er : Matt Morris

"Every morning without fail Mr. Morris brightens our day as he strolls through the studio and greets each of us with a smile, a “Good Morning!” and “How are you today?” . He is brimming with ingenious ideas, visual candy of all kinds, and dusty stories of LF days gone by. To work with Matt is to learn from a legend. When he’s not shooting pastels around the office, he’s creating new worlds on canvas. You’ll never meet a more humble, talented guy, and we pretty much adore him." -Laura Kaupp & Mindy Gudzinski Hometown: Fort Worth, TX Years at LF: 20 Current Project: Walls Lake House, St...

Craft Call: Hunt Restorations

"It was a dark and stormy day, the scaffolding was shaking, Boogie was yelling at Bubba, "The sky's about to fall!" The year 1981. Whiskey Canyon Ranch. Outside Kerrville. I was under the influence of the mighty large RED pencil wielded by O'Neil Ford. He was fond of saying, "Ask the mason how the stone wants to be first..., ask Boogie or Bubba...the Hunt Brothers!..." Once Boogie and Curtis were working on the Alamo restoration and expansion with Ford Powell Carson, O'Neil was not happy with the size and shape of the stones, so they went to his home at Willow Way where he drew each stone out...

Marketing Reels In Another Member

The marketing team is thrilled at the arrival of Jessica Vonderau, our new Marketing Coordinator and the most recent addition to the LF family. Growing up in Tipton, Indiana, Jessica says she can relate to John Mellencamp’s song, “Small Town”. A true Indiana native, she received her Masters of Urban Design and Bachelor of Landscape Architecture and Marketing from Ball State University. Her favorite Lake|Flato project is Armstrong Oil & Gas, appreciating how the architectural program breathed life back into a former derelict structure and created a unique and identifiable space around...

Better Know an LF'er : Jacqueline Fisher

"Something you may not have known about Jacqueline is that she spent many a summer on construction sites with her father, which instilled in her a great curiosity and understanding for how things go together. This understanding has made her quite the asset to our tiny little Josey Pavilion team where she has become reviteer and det ailer extraordinaire! It’s been wonderful to work with and get to know Jacqueline. She will be sorely missed come 2013 when she heads back to UT for her final semester. Other things to know about Jacqueline: she has a wonderful attitude, which may in part be due to...
