Lake|Flato Ranked Top Firm Overall in ARCHITECT 50 List

We are incredibly honored to be recognized as the top firm overall in the 2019 ARCHITECT 50, a nationwide performance-based ranking of architecture firms published annually by ARCHITECT Magazine! We are proud to be the first Texas-based practice to receive the top ranking.

 

The 2019 ARCHITECT 50 survey ranked firms based on a combination of a design portfolio and performance data in three categories: design, sustainability and business. In all, data from the country’s top 182 firms was considered. The ranking takes into account each firm’s diverse, nationally recognized design portfolio and progressive business practices, including sustainable design ethos, innovative use of technology, Research and Development programs, efforts to diversify its staff, mentorship program, employee benefits and community-based pro bono projects.

 

Since our founding in 1984, Lake|Flato has designed buildings that respond to the culture and climate of each unique place, creating environments that are rooted in their place, enrich communities and connect people to the natural environment.  The success of our firm derives from our team of talented and committed individuals who share a passion for the positive impact that architecture can have on a community and the natural environment.

Allyship for the Youth Climate Strike: September 20

September 2019

We are proud to join with fellow firms and organizations around the world to strike for the climate alongside our youth on Friday, September 20. Inspired by climate activist Greta Thunberg, our firm has pledged support for Architects Advocate’s Action on Climate Change to raise awareness of the need for urgent climate action leading up to the United Nations Climate Action Summit in New York on September 23.  We plan to support our youth both in San Antonio and Austin on Friday, September 20 by attending local climate strikes:

 

San Antonio:

Steps of City Council Chambers, Municipal Plaza 114 W Commerce Street

1-3 p.m.

Hosted by OperationClimateSA

 

Austin:

Texas State Capitol, 1100 Congress Ave.  

10 a.m. – 12 p.m.

Hosted by Youth Climate Strike

 

For more than 30 years, Lake|Flato has passionately advocated for environmental stewardship through sustainable design, striving to create work that is respectful in the use of natural resources and promotes healthy living. Previously, the firm joined the AIA 2030 Commitment to measure our projects’ progress towards carbon neutrality. We are continuing this commitment by standing alongside our youth to elevate their voices for urgent climate action. Join us today as we stand with students demanding climate action.  The next generation deserves a platform to voice their concerns and offer solutions as we collectively work to combat climate change.

AIA Film Challenge 3rd Place: Austin Central Library

September 2019

Our short film "A Building Shaped by Light: Austin Central Library" produced by Bluestack Media received 3rd place in the 2019 AIA Film Challenge Awards! The film captures the design process of the library, the grand opening to the public, and several interviews with team members involved in the project. New Mexico School for the Arts opens for Fall semester

August 2019

The New Mexico School for the Arts, the latest project to be completed by our Learning Studio, has officially opened its doors to welcome students for the Fall semester. As the country's only public boarding school for talented art students, the New Mexico School for the Arts will serve as a versatile academic space for students specializing in Drama, Music, Dance Visual Arts, Dance and Creative Writing. The new School was relocated next to the renovated Sanbusco Center in downtown Santa Fe. To learn more about the New Mexico School for the Arts, click here.

New York Times: When Libraries are the Tourist Attractions

Clinton Corners Residences Recognized with Architizer A+ Jury Award

We're honored our Clinton Corners Residence was selected as a Jury Award winner in the Architecture+Prefab category of the 2019 Architizer A+ Awards! Sited on a sylvan lot in the Hudson Valley, the home's simple building leverages prefabricated panelized construction to streamline design and integrate fast track construction. In their fifth episode, Dwell Magazine's RM-3 (Raw Materials 3 Ways) podcast takes a deep dive into the role of shellfish in construction materials, including limestone. Lake|Flato Associate Partner Steve Raike spoke to host Dan Maginn about the history of limestone, the different textures and characters it can take on, and why we've chosen to work with limestone on projects ranging from museums to residences, including our Olmos Park Residence featured in Dwell. Lake|Flato and SA+R Break Ground on University of Denver's New Campus Hub

June 2019

We have officially broken ground on the University of Denver's new Burwell Center for Career Achievement, a project in collaboration with Shears Adkins Rockmore. Designed as a campus hub for the university, the Center will be a gathering place for the extended DU community. Sited at a key nexus between the campus's traditional core and its growing urban edge, the new 23,000 SF center combines student career development with alumni engagement & programming. We are honored the distinguished 2019 TxA Design Awards Jury including Julie Eizenberg, FAIA (Koning Eizenberg Architecture), Eui-Sung Yi (Morphosis), Carol Ross Barney, FAIA (Ross Barney Architects), and Chris Annmarie Spencer, AIA, NOMA (Wheeler Kearns Architects) have selected six Lake|Flato projects ro receive TxA Design Awards:  The Prow, Knox College Whitcomb Art Center, Ishawooa Mesa Ranch, Confluence Park, Marine Education Center at the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory, and  Epoch Winery.
