Net Positive Ecology: Our Work Outside | 10:30 a.m. - 12 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency, Room Elwha B

The term “ecology” has been through the wash in recent years. As designers and architects increasingly look to meet their client’s interests in green design, we’ve seen considerable drift in what it means to protect, support, or restore ecological systems around built forms. In this session, we return to the theoretical foundation of the discipline of ecology and explain how its key principles can and should influence design.

If You Can Only Do One Thing: Using the COTE Toolkit to Elevate Every Project | 3:30 - 4:45 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency, Quinault Room (5th floor) 

This session is all about best practices, what they are, where to find them, and how they can be used to design better buildings in less time and with less effort. Referencing the COTE Top Ten Toolkit, a new resource that documents design best practices along the broad spectrum of sustainability measures, attendees will learn how the right information, delivered to the right people at the right time is an incredibly effective way to improve performance.

This session will present the sustainable design strategies to focus on when time, resources, or knowledge is limited. The high-impact, low-cost best practices presented in this session can be incorporated into any project and are an effective way of elevating performance in situation where, “you can only do one thing.”

Vibrant named "Most Gorgeous Restaurant of 2018"

Formerly a dry cleaners in Houston's Montrose neighborhood, the recently opened Vibrant eatery is a light-filled, minimalist adaptive reuse project that was named the "Most Gorgeous Restaurant of the Year" by Eater Houston. To read about the project transformation, click here.

We've officially broken ground on the new San Antonio Federal Courthouse! Lake|Flato is excited to be a part of this project that will capture the cultural spirit of San Antonio through the use of local vernacular and natural materials. Museum of Fine Arts, Houston Sarah Campbell Blaffer Foundation Center for Conservation in Architect Magazine

February 2019

Architect Magazine took an in-depth look at our recently completed Museum of Fine Arts, Houston's Sarah Campbell Blaffer Foundation Center for Conservation, the first building in North America constructed from tightly packed Dowell Laminated Timber panels that were prefabricated, panelized and lifted into place for quicker on-site construction. Confluence Park Receives AIA Honor Award for Architecture

February 2019

Confluence Park was recently recognized with a 2019 Institute Honor Award for Architecture from the American Institute of Architects. The award is one of the highest honors in the architecture profession, celebrating the best contemporary architecture which highlights the many ways buildings and spaces can improve lives. AIA’s nine-member jury selected submissions that demonstrated design achievement, including a sense of place and purpose, ecology, environmental sustainability and history. Confluence Park was among nine projects honored ranging from an elementary school in Tacoma, Washington to a museum in Blåvand, Denmark— see the list of award recipients here.

Architect Magazine: Nine Tech Strategies for 2019

Continuing their annual tradition of identifying technologies and business strategies from various architecture firm's, Architect Magazine's "Tech Strategies" list features Lake|Flato's Design Technologist Adam Heisserer, who describes the firm's plans to map invisible qualities including air quality, sound and occupant heart reate to better understand the human experience of our buildings. Marine Education Center at the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory Wins Wood Design & Building Honor Award

January 2019

The Marine Education Center at the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory was recognized with a 2018 Wood Design & Building Honor Award from the Wood Design & Building magazine in partnership with the Canadian Wood Council. Designed to be naturally resilient, the Marine Education Center was primarily constructed of Southern Yellow Pine in dimensional lumber, which was chosen and highlighted given its availability and prevalence as a local Mississippi commodity. The Center's buildings were sited tightly within the existing tree canopy, which serves as a natural wind buffer. Considering natural disasters and durability, the design focused on using and maintaining the land to serve as the first line of defense. Low-impact materials were selected for the health of building's occupants and to avoid ocean contamination in the event of a natural disaster. 

 

We're honored to receive this award for the Marine Education Center, which was a collaboration with Associate Architect unabridged Architecture and Landscape Architect Studio Outside, and made possible through our wonderful client, the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory at the University of Southern Mississipi.

Clinton Corners Porch House in Residential Design Magazine

January 2019

"Travel just 1 1/2 hours north of Manhattan, and you are worlds away from the caucophany of the city. Imagine the golden sun-drenched landscape of a Hudson River School painting— peaceful, beautiful, and timeless. This is the context for Lake|Flato's Clinton Corners Residence, a complex of three structures on a 2-acre lakeside property, and the architect's latest foray into prefabricated construction. While the project uses the DNA of the firm's Porch House program, it is its own new hybrid species."

Ulery's Lake Cabins in Builder Magazine: Minimalist Retreats Reimagine the Mountain Cabin

December 2018

"For Texas-based Lake|Flato, good architecture prevails when a building is in its right place and pared down to its simplest form. So when Lone Mountain Land Company tapped the architects, who are oft-revered for their commitment to environmentally thoughtful design that’s also landscape responsive, to conceptualize a small resort community of cabins at the gateway to Yellowstone National Park in Big Sky, Mont., they responded with two modest floor plans—relatively compact in the shadow of their neighboring mansionettes—that could work in a variety of site conditions."
