Net Positive Ecology: Our Work Outside10:30 a.m. - 12 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency, Room Elwha B

The term “ecology” has been through the wash in recent years. As designers and architects increasingly look to meet their client’s interests in green design, we’ve seen considerable drift in what it means to protect, support, or restore ecological systems around built forms. In this session, we return to the theoretical foundation of the discipline of ecology and explain how its key principles can and should influence design.

Panel: Bill Browning (Co-Founder, Terrapin Bright Green), Tenna Florian (Associate Partner, Lake|Flato), Pete Munoz (Senior Engineer, Biohabitats) and Juan Rovalo (Senior Ecologist/Integrated Design Specialist, Biohabitats.)

If You Can Only Do One Thing: Using the COTE Toolkit to Elevate Every Project | 3:30 - 4:45 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency, Quinault Room (5th floor)

This session is all about best practices, what they are, where to find them, and how they can be used to design better buildings in less time and with less effort. Referencing the COTE Top Ten Toolkit, a new resource that documents design best practices along the broad spectrum of sustainability measures, attendees will learn how the right information, delivered to the right people at the right time is an incredibly effective way to improve performance.

This session will present the sustainable design strategies to focus on when time, resources, or knowledge is limited. The high-impact, low-cost best practices presented in this session can be incorporated into any project and are an effective way of elevating performance in situation where, “you can only do one thing.”

Panel: Corey Squire (Sustainability Manager, Lake|Flato), Vikram Sami (Director of Building Performance, Olson Kundig Architects), Tate Walker (Director of Sustainability, OPN Architects), Helena Zambrano (Director of Sustainability, Overland Partners Architects), Betsy del Monte (Cameron McAllister Group), Gunnar Hubbard (Principal/Sustainability Practice Leader, Thornton Tomasetti), Stephen Endy (Architect/Sustainability Specialist, Mahlum) and Anne Hicks Harney (President and Founder, Long Green Specs.)

Marine Education Center at the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory Wins Wood Design & Building Honor Award

January 2019

The Marine Education Center at the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory was recognized with a 2018 Wood Design & Building Honor Award from the Wood Design & Building magazine in partnership with the Canadian Wood Council. Designed to be naturally resilient, the Marine Education Center was primarily constructed of Southern Yellow Pine in dimensional lumber, which was chosen and highlighted given its availability and prevalence as a local Mississippi commodity. The Center's buildings were sited tightly within the existing tree canopy, which serves as a natural wind buffer. Considering natural disasters and durability, the design focused on using and maintaining the land to serve as the first line of defense. Low-impact materials were selected for the health of building's occupants and to avoid ocean contamination in the event of a natural disaster.

We're honored to receive this award for the Marine Education Center, which was a collaboration with Associate Architect unabridged Architecture and Landscape Architect Studio Outside, and made possible through our wonderful client, the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory at the University of Southern Mississipi.

Clinton Corners Porch House in Residential Design Magazine

January 2019

"Travel just 1 1/2 hours north of Manhattan, and you are worlds away from the caucophany of the city. Imagine the golden sun-drenched landscape of a Hudson River School painting— peaceful, beautiful, and timeless. This is the context for Lake|Flato's Clinton Corners Residence, a complex of three structures on a 2-acre lakeside property, and the architect's latest foray into prefabricated construction. While the project uses the DNA of the firm's Porch House program, it is its own new hybrid species."

Ulery's Lake Cabins in Builder Magazine: Minimalist Retreats Reimagine the Mountain Cabin

December 2018

"For Texas-based Lake|Flato, good architecture prevails when a building is in its right place and pared down to its simplest form. So when Lone Mountain Land Company tapped the architects, who are oft-revered for their commitment to environmentally thoughtful design that’s also landscape responsive, to conceptualize a small resort community of cabins at the gateway to Yellowstone National Park in Big Sky, Mont., they responded with two modest floor plans—relatively compact in the shadow of their neighboring mansionettes—that could work in a variety of site conditions."

AIA San Antonio Recognizes Seven Lake|Flato Projects at People+Place Awards

December 2018

We are honored AIA San Antonio has recognized seven of our projects as part of their 2018 People+Place Awards. From local Confluence Park, to a prefabricated home in the Hudson Valley, to wineries in California— each project was designed uniquely to respond to the context of its place. Thank you AIA San Antonio and congratulations to all local architects and project teams who were recognized this year!

Honor Awards

Confluence Park, in collaboration with Matsys

"This project was the result of a patient client who gives the architect freedoms to invent and innovate. With projects like this, we should all recognize the role of the client in creating this succesful architecture. The multiplicity of uses for such a space facilitates an investment in the community that allows the plaza to be something very special. The juxtaposition between the rough and the smooth materials and forms creates playful and engaging spaces."

Epoch Winery

"An exceptionally phenomenal space in both scale and form, extremely well executed. The clean and modernist forms and materials come together to form poetic moments throught the spaces and landscapes."

The Marine Education Center at the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory, in collaboration with unabridged Architecture

"This project exemplifies how playful elements and more serious architecture can coexist. The screens make for an interesting play of lighting and shadows that truly elevates this project."

Merit Awards

Bellaire Residence, in collaboration with Natalye Appel Architects

"A variant body and positively tacit experience. The outdoor spaces and detailing of how steel, wood and concrete come together are exquisite... each room is given so much attention in terms of daylighting."

Clinton Corners

"Interesting to see the tremendous results from panelized construction, which can be so difficult to achieve. It's wonderful to see architecture that's not overly wrought. It sticks to a two-form house with a bridge connection yielding simple spaces and a highly resolved scheme."

Georgia Tech West Village Commons, in collaboration with Cooper Carry

"The project is a simple, elevated structure that turns a daunting, large building into beautiful pockets that feel independent from the whole...The use of multi-level terraces are especially nice."

Saxum Winery

"Outstanding in its elegant use of understated materials and integration into the site. It is unique in that it has a down to earth restrained palette on both the interior and the exterior."
