Texas State Cemetery
Lake|Flato’s master plan for the renovation of this 28-acre historic site transformed an overlooked space into a sacred place and created new components to enhance public understanding of the State’s history. Massive stone wall-like buildings were placed along the perimeter to provide a sense of enclosure. The 255-foot-long Visitor Center forms a pedestrian portal into the cemetery and contains an exhibit gallery, offices, and a maintenance facility. The formal entry is through the Rose Gate, a replica of the gates on the Texas State Capitol grounds, flanked by a 265-foot-long Columbarium crafted from native sunset-red granite. A single road links the Rose Gate to the Plaza de Los Recuerdos (Plaza of Memories), dedicated to Texans who have contributed to the State.
