Texas Biomedical Research Institute Facility
The Texas Biomedical Research Institute Laboratory and Office Building acts as a gateway and public face for the Institutes’s 200-acre campus. In addition to providing much-needed laboratory and administration space, the building houses the Institutes’s executive administration. The office portions of the facility are designed in two linear office bars while labs are located in a separate building mass. These three elements are connected by two glazed lobbies which act as the main entries for the building. This composition is oriented both to minimize exposure to the intense South Texas sun as well as to define a landscaped courtyard between the new facility and existing buildings on campus. Tilt-up concrete walls act as both the exterior skin and as primary load-bearing structural elements creating a building system that is both efficient and sustainable.
