Hill Country Jacal

Pipe Creek, TX

The Hill Country Jacal (a Mexican term referring to a lean-to structure) is an off-the-grid weekend retreat, tucked into a rock ledge above a creek, northwest of San Antonio. The simple screened cedar pole structure is oriented towards the prevailing summer breeze and creek, while its stone wall and operable “flaps” shelter the living space from the northwest winter winds. A thick limestone wall houses an outdoor shower, bunk beds and composting toilet. The screened living space and adjacent open porch step down the hill under a simple shed roof.
