June 2016

Tour Hog Pen Creek Residence

Winner of a national 2016 AIA Housing Award, Lake|Flato’s Hog Pen Creek Residence sits on a five-acre site connected to Lake Austin, leaving existing majestic oak and pecan trees virtually untouched. The fluid two-story, L-shaped home features ample outdoor spaces through walkways and porches, breezy interiors with ample glass for connections to the outdoors, locally crafted materials throughout, and an adjacent 25-yard lap pool.

Honored with a Best of Houzz 2016 Award for its “commitment to excellence in design,” Lake|Flato is also featured by Houzz for the thoughtful design of Mill Springs Ranch in Vanderpool, TX. Nestled at the confluence of two creeks on a Texas Hill Country Ranch, Mill Springs provides a water’s edge retreat. Four structures organize around the site of 20th-century dam, forming a courtyard shaded by mature pecan trees and an intimate connection to cool creeks.

Lake|Flato Projects Honored with ArchDaily Top 100 Building Awards

June 2016

Two Lake|Flato projects were chosen for ArchDaily’s 2016 Top 100 Buildings Award program, which highlights significant, inspiring works of American architecture—projects that are milestones for their time and are highly regarded by the architectural community.

The Dixon Water Foundation Josey Pavilion in Decatur, Texas, is the first Living Building project in Texas and the Gulf region. The 5,400-square-foot open-air pavilion is an education and meeting center for the Dixon Water Foundation, embodying its mission to promote healthy watersheds through sustainable land management to preserve water resources.

The ASU Health Services Building in Tempe, Arizona, is a 34,500-square-foot facility that engages the campus' primary pedestrian spine and creates a welcoming presence without appearing overtly clinical. Existing facilities were demolished in part and otherwise renovated, with an added wing transforming the building’s overall identity. Private landscaped courtyards extend waiting areas for patients, allowing them to engage with the environment in a healthful way.

Renovation begins on St. Francis School in Louisville

June 2016

Lake|Flato has just begun construction on an expansion to the downtown Louisville high school campus of St. Francis School, a progressive private preschool-12th grade institution. The 17,000-square-foot addition, coined Expanding Thought! by students, increases the school’s original 30,000-square-foot footprint by 50%. The first phase of the renovation will include a new relocated entrance on Broadway, a new student-centered commons room, and a “Space for Thought” incorporating technology to be used for classes and events. Lake|Flato was hired to analyze the school’s existing facilities and develop a master plan to address opportunities for the existing building, proposing strategies to increase arts and athletics spaces, preserve the school’s collegiate energy and unique culture, and increase its community presence.
