Craft Call: Reznikoff Custom Furniture

Residence for Art pantry - quarter sawn white oak  (Project Designer: Lake | Flato Architects)
“We make furniture, not cabinets” is a frequent Mike Reznikoff quote. His first appearance with LF was on the Lasater House in Fort Worth working with Karla and Ted. After more than 20 years he still returns to apply oil and refinish the wood. Bartlit was next (ask him about his warped walnut counter top) followed by the Residence for Art, Lake Austin Residence, and the Armstrong Residence. The SK Ranch is his first project in some time with LF. His estimates are influenced by proximity of the project to fly fishing. The Mike Reznikoff Trio is a jazz group that has absolutely nothing to do with our Mike although he does play a pretty good slide guitar and would be thrilled to perform at your wedding, bar, or bat mitzvah." -Bill Aylor

LF: Where do you call home? MR: I call Fort Worth home. I was born in FW and truly enjoy the area. Of course we do work all over the country. LF: What led you to your craft? MR: I started out as a framing carpenter but when it got cold and the buildings got too tall I went to work for a furniture manufacturer so I could stay warm with my feet on the ground. I worked for 2 years and then started my own business. I started by fixing broken chairs and then talking people into letting me build them a peice of furniture. We have been in business for 37 years and we make furniture, cabinetry, and architectural millwork. Our work has been published in Architectural Digest, Texas Architects, and many more publications. In 2001 we received TSA's Artisan Award. We started working with Lake | Flato in 1994 and have completed several L|F projects and have enjoyed them all. We have a 10,000 sq. ft. shop and a staff of six and all are true craftsmen  LF: What are you working on now? MR: We have three residential projects in Austin and we're working on the SK Ranch for Lake | Flato. We continue to have furniture pieces to make and we do some restoration work as well. In the shop now we are restoring a piece from the first synagogue in FW. The piece consists of wooden tables of the Ten Commandments. We are also registered with the State of Texas as a restoration source for the State Capital.
