Large civic projects like the Austin Central Library take a great deal of time and effort by a large number of team members. The process, much like we intend the the final product to be, is a mix of the best of digital and analog technologies available. In the library's design process we have utilized many different technologies; from clay models and sketchbooks, to Building Information Models and complex digital energy and daylight models. Here is a photo timeline from clay model to excavation. A brief overview of the project can be found below the photo timeline. 2009-10-20 - early clay...
Conceived as a modern farm complex in northern California, the Yee Residence is designed to maximize both views and breezes. Structures are independent of the main barn to accentuate a farm-like complex. Different buildings, and a dry stacked-stone wall, form a sanctuary within a landscape of rolling hills and oak groves. Answers by Karla Greer The Story: Sarah and Jason Yee started this process before they were married by purchasing an incredible site in the Santa Lucia Preserve, a 20,000 acre development located in Carmel Valley, California. The Preserve is managed by Santa Lucia...
The Seaholm Intake was once the pump house for the Seaholm Power Plant and now sits empty on the shores of Lady Bird Lake in Austin. Our team's entry Connect/Reveal/Clean envisions The Intake as a culturally vibrant, multi-functional space that encourages visitors to slow down, engage with the natural systems that flourish in Austin and experience the blurring between land and water; urban and natural. This vision 1. Connect s Austinites both physically and experientially to Lady Bird Lake and the larger community at The Intake and beyond; 2. Reveal s the original function of the building in...
In the middle of July Tenna and I made a trip to the 2013 Boy Scouts of America National Jamboree. The Summit Bechtel Reserve is the new Jamboree home for the Boy Scouts of America. Previously located at an Army Base near Washington DC, this site in West Virginia is their new and permanent location. Hosting about 40,000 to 45,000 people this is its inaugural year. The purpose of our trip was primarily to visit the site of the Scott Visitor Center - currently under construction - but also to take in and observe the Jamboree in progress. We spent an entire day there as visitors where we had to...
Lake|Flato Architects is pleased to announce that San Antonio’s own Alamo Beer Company Brewery is on its way. Located east of highway 281 and just south of the historic Hays Street bridge, the 18,000 square foot brewery is uniquely positioned at the gateway to the Dignowity Hill neighborhood. In addition to crafting crisp, tasty brews, the project aims to catalyze the city’s growing east side, providing a vibrant destination for locals and visitors alike. The design organizes and connects the 3 primary programmatic elements: brewery operations, administrative offices, and beer hall. The...
Located within walking distance of the DePauw Campus, the Prindle Institute of Ethics lies within the 500-acre DePauw University Nature Park, situated above an abandoned limestone quarry. The Institute's facilities, positioned around a central courtyard, include conference rooms, an auditorium, a library, dining rooms, and guest suites capable of hosting visiting scholars. The central courtyard not only serves as a visual connection for the building's users, but also provides views to the natural environment for public spaces within the building. With its original buildings by Eliel Saarinen, the campus has seen more recent additions by such noted architects as Steven Holl, Rafael Moneo, and Todd Williams and Billie Tsien. The Big House is a design concept for a family ranch near Junction, Texas. The design is meant to contrast with another project located on the property known as the Rock House. Originally conceived of as a Porch House, the addition of program and prolonged factory schedule have allowed it to developed into a site built project. Sited and perched along a bluff with spectacular views to the river and a nearby spring, the design consists of two gabled "bars" and two shed structures. The shed structures would house all of the utilitarian and ranch operations program, while the gable forms share...
On a recent friday, some of us from the office gathered for what's known as Peanut Gallery for the Baker Preserve residence with Cody Knop. Graham Beach defines the office Peanut Gallery as "Designer Happy Hour". This is everyone's opportunity to get a glimpse of the project and provide feedback to the team as they move forward. While the design conversation is always stimulating, peanuts are a must, and beer is a must. Karla Greer describes the Baker Preserve as located on an untouched site in Austin that has been used by hikers enjoying the cool spring fed creek, wildlife and trails through...
The "Air Barn" was designed to provide a habitat for the client's string of polo ponies; in addition to shelter, each barn provides food and water for up to 12 ponies. The composition of two traditional open “pole-barn” structures, with deep roof overhangs, creates the housing portion of these barns. Solid shed “saddlebag” forms flank each end, which contain tack and feed rooms. Originally there was a single barn, but as construction started the second barn was added, which is how it became the plural “Air Barn s ”. . . "Why build one when you can build two for twice the price"- quote from SR...
