Museum of Fine Arts Houston Gallery and Conservation Center - Houston

Houston, TX

The 20,000 square foot Conservation Center addition transforms the existing garage into a pivotal portal to the MFAH campus from the east and strengthens the urban fabric with a new lobby and café on Fanin. It unites the now separate Painting, Sculpture & Textiles, Decorative Arts, Paper, Photography, and Science departments to best serve the museum collection and curatorial efforts.  The delicate two-story addition above the garage houses the Conservation studios in a succession of east/west oriented sheds which capture day light.  The east/west sheds have north facing clerestories which distribute indirect natural light throughout the studios.  The flat roofed bays between the sheds contain the critical conservation lab support spaces which service the studios. The Binz Street façade puts conservation studios on display in a projecting glass bay which hovers above the new lobby and Café.
